Learning resources recommendations?

Hi All,

In the interest of being as prepared as possible, we are trying to learn as much as possible and wanted to open up a discussion about learning resources: Does anyone have any recommendations (good or bad) on books, Web sites or training programs that you have taken as waiting/adoptive parents?

We really like Adoptive Families magazine, as well as the online discussion groups on their website (

I did some on line training using I found it really beneficial. It is fairly inexpensive and you can do on class at a time.

Good luck with your adoption!

Thanks for the recommendations!

We do love Adoptive Families Magazine and have been using its resources since before we even started the process.

We also have taken two classes through Adopt Education. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience; we were disappointed by both content and format. Perhaps we picked the wrong ones.

We have gotten a lot out of Baby Care and Infant CPR classes offered through our local hospital system and various adoption-specific classes offered by our agency. We also have been reading a lot. Our favorites so far include:

  • Secrets to Your Successful Domestic Adoption by Jennifer Pedley (a birth mother)
  • The Mystery of Risk by Ira Chasnoff
  • Raising Adopted Children and The Open Adoption Experience - two books by Lois Melina
